Changes in the Career Cycle Throughout One's Lifespan, Part 2
According to Zunker (2002) career guidance must be delivered to meet the growing needs of young students at every level occupational development.Programs should be developed according to children's exploratory age when they narrow their career decisions based upon their personal characteristics. High school students should profit from programs designed to complement occupations and their skills.Included in these programs should be counseling on the importance of matching educational and career goals. Programs at lower-level grades may include computer skills and communication training. Work-release programs for high school students will allow them to adopt occupational skills that will only be obtained from hand-on experience.Through this training, the student will also develop the interpersonal communication skills and the self confidence needed in today's competitive job market. According to Zunker (2002) college career guidance programs should include training to develop interpersonal skills needed in today's job market, self-identity, personal motivations, lifelong learning strategies, how the needs of society influence work, decision making, environmental dynamics, resume writing, interview skills and career transition skills. These counseling topics may be presented during one-on-one counseling, seminar-type programs, elective courses, outreach programs, and life planning workshops. Many of the college-level services are available to alumni. In many cases, non-college affiliated people may also use the services. In today's uncertain job market, many people find themselves a product of downsizing or chasing their own entrepreneurial dreams. These individuals need to continually maintain an eye on their career.Whether working for themselves or an organization, resumes, interpersonal communication skills, life-long learning, and decision making skills continue to be of importance.
